Face of the Month - January, Etayne

Etayne Rozenn is our Face for January 2002. The unimpressive at first sight kitchen maid does have something more than just potatoes and carrots up her sleeve!

RPC : What got you started into roleplaying?

Etayne : My first introduction to role-playing was through RoD. It seemed the natural extension of the game itself in my mind since beating up mobs just didn't do it for me.

RPC : What's your preferred style of RP?

Etayne : - spontaneous, responsive style rp that can happen anywhere at anytime.. even just meeting on the street. The plot flows through conversation and the natural extension of what the character itself would do in response to the situation. When it's not too scripted, then good rp'ers can really add to the plot rather than the 'director' sending tells behind the scenes telling everyone what to do.. hate that. For me, it doesn't have to be a deep plot, although I enjoy those too. Sometimes just light-hearted banter in character is just as much fun.

RPC : What are your latest plans for RPing?

Etayne : Etayne has discovered her eagle missing which seems to be tied in with a bond she made involving a bloodied dagger and freeing her dear Falennt from an icy tomb. Her link with nature has weakened and has definitely altered or is in the process of altering her view of things. It will be interesting to see where that takes her and how it will affect how she is involved in other semi-related rp scenes.

RPC : When do you usually RP and for how long?

Etayne : Usually only get to rp weekends for a few hours at a time now that I'm back at school Such a pity when rl interferes don't you think. We should really do something about that. Always did want to figure out a way to make a living at this. Do I get paid for this interview btw?
RPC : No.

RPC : What is the main thing you look for in what you consider a good rp plot?

Etayne : PLAYERS WHO STAY IN CHARACTER AND REACT AS THEIR CHARACTER WOULD REACT. I love well-developed characters. By that I mean, that there's a distinct personality happening, not just an extension of the player. When you have that, then any rp plot is good I think. hmm..unless it sinks to a sappy soap opera.. hate that too. ;)

RPC : What has been your favorite scene you have ever participated in, or not participated in but watched or seen a log of? Why?

Etayne : I'd have to say at this point that it would be the scene with Kacy, Falennt and Etayne 'exchanging' Ffalenn for Falennt.. quite heart-rendering I think. .. not telling you anymore. You'll have to read it on Falennt's website ;)

RPC : .What current plots are you working on, how can people join in if they want to?

Etayne : Just finished up a plot run by Falennt's player and am doing a spin-off of that one with Etayne losing her touch with 'nature' and all that that involves. I see good rp always being an extension of what just happened, maybe with a different character emphasis…somewhat the way rl goes. Anyone can join it, but I'd recommend reading Etayne's bio and the stuff on RnF's Website pertaining to it for background knowledge. Then it's just a matter of 'bumping' into her or any other involved character, either in the Emerald Hills or Darkhaven. The more the merrier I say. I learn so much from watching how others rp. I welcome it.

RPC : What do you think is the most important element of a good character, a good story?

Etayne : Good character - lots of personality including quirks and a little mystery.. super heroes that dont' have faults and can do anything and everything would be rather boring
Good story - a drama with lots of twists in it and room for as many players as possible to participate in

RPC : Etayne's official duties are in the kitchen of Lo'Kier. Why did you choose to cast her as a 'servant'? Has this IC status resulted in any barriers to roleplay?

Etayne : It gives other players a reference as to what Etayne's role in society in that time period would have been. There were few that could manage to survive without some kind of trade. It also gave me a foundation as a player when deciding how Etayne would react to a situation. She'll probabaly graduate from the kitchens to work in the Great Hall and then who knows.. maybe moonlight at the Darkhaven Tavern ;)

Aside from having to mutely accept slights on her status ;) no barriers at all. In fact, it has enhanced it considerably..gives her more depth as a character i think

RPC : As a continuation of the last question, would you describe Etayne as content with her current life? Does she itch to 'pull out her sword and go adventuring' according to the stereotype of the adventurer, or is she content with her life as it is?

Etayne : Right now she's not too content. Her whole reason for being has disappeared. She would never 'itch' to use her sword. To her, all life is sacred and would only pull it to defend herself. But she does want to get out of the kitchens. Maybe she'll take up with another hermit again and wander her hills ;)

RPC : Etayne is always seen with an eagle companion. Is there a greater significance to the eagle, or is it just a druidic familiar/totem?

Etayne : Much greater significance! *winks and says it with a lilt of mysteriousness to her voice*

RPC : Rumours have it that lately Etayne has been acting rather off colour. Has she fallen in love? Out of love? Fallen ill? Mid-life crisis?

Etayne : No no.. let the rumours continue; makes for very interesting rp ;)

RPC : Etayne seems to be portrayed as a very strong female character. Is there any weakness or shortcoming in her, which is not seen by any character at all?

Etayne : Allergies! yep..a druid with allergies ;)

RPC : Etayne is of the human race, and it is said humans can be the easiest to play, and yet one of the hardest. Would you agree with this statement?

Etayne : Yes, now that i think about it. I think the difficulty lies in not letting the character become mundane and ordinary as a human or take on the player's own personality being that the player is human…we hope anyway. Other races offer a rich cultural background to rp off of where a human can be boring if not much thought is given to it.

RPC : Would you as a player accept that all game skills and spells can be used and acknowledged in roleplay here Or they should be kept quite out of the scene itself? Also, will using of these skills and spells actually decrease the chance of roleplaying out several sequences or abilities?

For example, a mage astralling into a scene and roleplaying it out, when the characters in the scene are somewhere faraway, without the mage's knowledge of their whereabouts.

Or a cleric casting the spell heal on someone who has fainted ICly instead of doing the smelling salt routine.

Etayne : Again, I think a good roleplayer can rp off of anything with a little imagination. Of course, a good rp'er isn't going to rp a spell or skill where it wouldn't normally flow into the scene. ie. a cleric can't heal someone who's fainted.. that i know of anyway. I think that's the greatest mistake a player can fall into, playing your character outside the limitations of its class, race and position in the rp scene. It wrecks the scene for everyone involved. If you have a self-centered rper, then yep, all those things mentioned are going to be a problem.

When I play a healer, I rp the scene with the option of total healing being decided by the 'healed' character's player. I don't think it's a good idea to play a scene in such a way that it restricts how the other player can control his 'puppet'. All players though should respect the race and 'class skills' of the opposite player's character. If this character would have that ability to heal or astral then that player should make his/her character respond accordingly as a show of respect for the rp scene/game.

The only thing generated game wise that I find hard to rp off of is the weather conditions. They change too often and it seems weird to go from rain to snow so much ..especially if you're swimming ;)

Hugs to all you rpers trying to make the game fun for other rpers!
